Hello! I am Bev West and as one of the 4 Sisters I have the honor of teaching Basic Sewing, Quilting, Making Bags and Totes as well as Stuffies. It was over 60 plus years ago that I sewed my first skirt with some friendly help from a friends Grandfather (he taught Home Ec at the college level). My Mother and Grandmother had always sewn so I guess it is in my blood. Memories of my Grandmother sitting me on the edge of her bed while she showed me her stash are fondly cherished. I came to Quilting later in life and Bag Making in the last 10 years but have fallen in love with them all. I look forward to sharing the knowledge that has been shared with me over the years.
I'm Julie Campbell
I call myself a generational sewist because of the strong family history of sewing/quilting. One of my most treasured possessions are the dutch doll blocks sewn by my great-grandmother from my mother's childhood dresses. Among our family legends is shared the tale of when the farm and homestead contents were auctioned at the beginning of the Depression, my grandmother made my grandfather get her sewing machine. "With that I can feed our family." And she did.
At 5-ish mom sat me down with an embroidery hoop, fabric, and it feels like there has been a needle in my hand ever since. In school I sewed my clothes and even afterward most of my garments were also made by me. It wasn't until 15 years ago that quilting became my principal focus.
I am so happy to have this opportunity to share all I have with our students. There is a special joy that comes when a student "gets it" and takes off on their own sewing journey.
My name is Rita Loveday. I began sewing around 11 - 13 years of age with the help of my older sister. I studied Home Economics in college and worked several years after that as a 4-H agent and later earned a Master's degree in Textiles and Clothing at the University of Nebraska. While there I learned flat pattern design and taught clothing construction classes. Designer clothing alterations in a major clothing store gave me the needed experience in fitting ready to wear garments.
Developing serger projects and teaching serger classes for several years allowed me to become confident in this area.
I am also experienced with making custom slipcovers and recently closed a custom embroidery business that I owned for 15 years.
I encourage "Hands on" learning and love for others to succeed.
So glad you're checking out our sewing school! I'm Sue Carey. Sewing and Quilting are my passion. I admit, I love to pet fabric! My first sewing lesson was about 45 years ago when I bought a used sewing machine from a newspaper ad. After wrestling the monster into the car and driving my new found toy home, I asked my mom to teach me. Chuckling, she suggested I take lessons from someone else since she failed Home Ec in high school and it was just not her thing!. That was the start of a hobby and side hustle that has lasted through decades.
Being a Navy wife, I've moved from one end of the US to the other with my children in tow. Every new duty station brought intrigue and new lifelong friends. I enjoyed /immersing myself into the local culture and it's history, learning about local foods and how to make them, (my other passion is eating) and playing tourist. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, traveling and best of all, spending time with friends.
